The Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin Festival World Pumpkin Pie Eating Championship

Location: Elk Grove, CA
Date: 10-04-2015
Winner: Joey Chestnut, with 18.25b of Pumpkin Pie in 8 mins!

CHESTNUT DOMINATES PUMPKIN PIE CHAMPIONSHIP!

There would be no mistake here. No misstep. This was Chestnut's to lose. The overhead smash at a Wimbledon Match Point. The wide open tight end in the end zone at the Super Bowl. A double 20 with three arrows to win the William Hill World Darts Championship. The easy stuff. The stuff that the greats do in their sleep. The stuff that you and I would mess up given half a shot.

The second annual Elk Grove Giant Pumpkin Festival World Pumpkin Pie Eating Championship was Chestnut's to lose, with respect to his rivals, and lose he did not. With his nemesis Stonie sitting the event out, Chestnut entered as the firm favorite and carried out his task with precision and aplomb. No fairytale for another. A win for Chestnut. Clinical, ruthless, clean.

But hardly joyless. The beautiful people of Elk Grove, CA, made sure of that, their clear, wide smiles basking in the early fall NorCal afternoon light. They cheered on one of their own—Joey, Joey, Joey—and their hero did what they wished. He ate and he ate and he ate until there was no more time left to eat. Eight minutes; 18.25lbs. Not a World Record. But a job well done. And in this America, at this time, that is a credit to one man. A man of purpose and drive. Chestnut.
