The 2018 World Championship Canteen Sandwich Eating Contest is brought to you by the good people at the Greater Ottumwa Convention and Visitors Bureau and highlights the signature food item of that great city's most venerable eating institution. The Canteen sandwich can only be enjoyed at Canteen in the Alley, which has served its signature loose-meat sandwich since 1927—in 2017, the Canteen in the Alley won the USA Today’s Readers’ Choice as the #1 place to get a loose meat sandwich across Iowa. Major League Eaters from near and far are warmly encouraged to sign up for the chance to compete in this landmark championship.

ABOUT CANTEEN LUNCH IN THE ALLEY! In 1927, a five-stool restaurant serving loose-meat sandwiches and homemade pies opened in Ottumwa, IA. Canteen Lunch in the Alley has become a fixture of the town. Located in a historic building on an alley lot, the charm, history, and delicious food draw visitors from all over Iowa and beyond. The tradition of getting lunch at “The Canteen” has become a staple in Ottumwa culture now and for future generations.
