Bison Lays Down the Spoon

10-01-2004

The competitive eating community paused today as Ray ‘The Bison’ Meduna, the top ranked eater in the Northwest and the World Sweet Kolache Eating Champion, unexpectedly announced his retirement.

Meduna struggled at the Winchell’s World Donut Eating Championship in Los Angeles, placing sixth. However, he leaves a powerful legacy that includes strong performances in sweet corn, thickburgers, potato chips, traditional Easter fare, and other disciplines.

David Bear referenced the proverbs of Sophagus, the Norse God of Consumption, by comparing Meduna’s enormous stomach capacity to his enormous heart and sense of camaraderie. IFOCE president Richard Shea said simply: “Ray is a man of great stature in our sport. He will be missed, and we hope to see him on the circuit again soon.”
