Reeves Tops LeFevre to Take Watermelon Eating Contest

08-04-2005

Buffalo Jim Reeves achieved an impressive victory at the Brookville Community Picnic in Ohio, besting number-three-ranked Richard LeFevre by eating more than 13 pounds of watermelon in 15 minutes.

Placing third, in what has also been hailed as a major accomplishment, was Patrick Bertoletti, a rising eater who consumed just under 13 pounds of melon in the contest.

Reeves, fresh off of impressive performances in the Alka-Seltzer US Open of Competitive Eating and the Nathan's Famous hot dog circuit, continued at a steady pace throughout the grueling 15-minute match. Meanwhile, many of the other eaters slowed or stopped.

After more than a year of near-dominance, Lefevre has experienced a few hiccups on the circuit lately, including losses to newcomers Joey Chestnut and Tim Janus. Nonetheless, LeFevre has accumulated a significant number of titles and the accompanying prize money.
