Jammin' Joe's Redemption

05-01-2006

Florida's Jammin' Joe LaRue drew a record crowd to the World Sweet Corn Eating Championship today and he did not disappoint. The top-ranked eater in Florida set a new sweet corn on the cob eating record by consuming 34 ears in 12 minutes. The previous record of 33 ½ ears was set in 2004 by legendary gurgitator Ed Cookie Jarvis.

In second place was Jason Smith with 30 and in third place was Bryan the Lion Miller with 28 ears. The event took place at the annual Sweet Corn Fiesta in West Palm Beach.

The crowd was comprised largely of LaRue supporters, a group of Florida eating fans who've vocally supported the big man since his loss in hot dogs two weeks ago to Crazy Leg's Conti. That event, which went into overtime, has become one of the most talked about Nathan's Famous qualifiers in history.

LaRue had promised to win the Sweet Corn Championship and appeared satisfied and a tad jaunty during the awards ceremony.
