ESPN3 to Carry Event Live; Top Talent to Include Sudo, Chestnut, Adrian Morgan, Badlands Booker and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas

ESPN3 has announced that it will carry the National Buffalo Wing Festival’s 13th annual U.S. National Buffalo Wing-Eating Championship live at 5 P.M. on Sunday, August 31, 2014, as Joey Chestnut, the number one-ranked eater in the world, competes against the sport’s top talent at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY.

Challenging Chestnut in the event will be the number-seven-ranked Adrian Morgan, who is the crawfish-eating champion of the world. Morgan placed second to Chestnut in a recent wing-eating championship. Also competing will be Miki Sudo of Las Vegas, NV, who has eaten 104 hard-boiled eggs in eight minutes. Sudo is ranked number four in the world by Major League Eating and is the world’s top-ranked female eater. Former wing-eating champion Sonya Thomas will seek a comeback against Chestnut at the event.

Eating competitions at the two-day National Buffalo Wing Festival get underway on Saturday, August 30 at 6 pm with the Buffet Bowl, a first-to-finish contest headlined by a deep field of Major League Eaters, including the great Badlands Booker, Michelle Lesco, and Buffalo Jim Reeves. On Sunday, August 31, at 5 P.M., all eyes will be on Chestnut at the U.S. National Buffalo Wing-Eating Championship, a 12-minute, all-you-can-eat contest. At stake over the weekend are two championship titles and a total of $4,300 in cash prizes. Both events will be held at the main stage at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, NY.

“The National Buffalo Wing Festival has become a Labor Day weekend institution, and having ESPN carry the event live brings the festival to a new level,” said festival founder, Wing King Drew Cerza. “In Buffalo, we are huge fans of ESPN, and on Sunday, August 31, the world will see how Buffalo ends the summer in style.”

“Adrian Morgan is known as ‘The Rabbit’ for his incredible speed, and he recently lost to Chestnut by only the smallest of margins—he could take Chestnut down,” said George Shea, chairman of Major League Eating. “As reigning wing champion, Joey has captured the hearts of many Buffalonians, but there is a large contingent hoping The Black Widow will rise again.”

The U.S. National Buffalo Wing-Eating Championship is a contest to see who can consume the wing meat off the bone. A debris-food, the wings are weighed before and after the contest. Competitors in the Buffet Bowl race to finish a five-pound bowl of food that features various staples of Buffalo cuisine. In past years, Buffet Bowl items have included Buffalo-style chicken fingers, BBQ wings, Buffalo-style chicken salad, sausages and pierogies.
